Flood Insurance - Basics and Beyond Basics

We designed this flood program to offer you the flexibility of participating in either a full-day or half-day session, depending on how much you want to learn about the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). You can get the exact amount of information you need by participating in a half-day session covering either the basics (Session I) or go beyond the basics (Session II). Or you can maximize your knowledge about the NFIP by attending both sessions for a full day.

Session I--The Basics of the National Flood Insurance Program

This session explores the purpose of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and some of the legislation that affects its operation, including the Write Your Own program, mandatory purchase requirements and recent guidelines that resulted from the Reform Act of 2004. You can also expect to come out of this session with knowledge about flood insurance rate maps, policy language and get an overview of coverage provided by the three NFIP policy forms. Finally, you will cover those miscellaneous items like, premium payment mailing rules and the waiting period and application of the deductible. You will leave with confidence knowing how to write flood insurance and where to get help when you need it.

Session II--Understanding the NFIP-Beyond the Basics

This session dives into the uniqueness of the flood program going beyond the basics covered in the first session. You can expect an in-depth look at the peculiarities of the flood policy language as it relates to coverage limitations, property not covered and valuation methods. You will also spend this session reviewing the revised Elevation Certificate and practice interpreting the information contained on the certificate and be introduced to the lowest floor guide. Other topics you will cover include: grandfathering rating rules, insurance relative to a residential or commercial condominium and restrictions in Coastal Barrier Resource Areas. By the end, you will be beyond the basics.
