Modifying certificates of insurance
Producers often inquire about what they should do when they are asked to modify language on a certificate or have to fill out one that was created by the certificate holder.
From a legal standpoint, a certificate of insurance is an informational document issued by or on behalf of an insurance company. Certificates are simply snapshots of basic policy coverages and limits at the time of issuance of that certificate. Certificates are not intended to modify coverages or change the terms of the insurance contract and, in theory they convey no contractual rights to the certificate holder.
