A LESSON IN DISASTER PLANNING
Top five things local homeowners can learn from California wildfires

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – The California wildfires serve as a forceful reminder: there is no time like the present to prepare for a disaster. And homeowner’s insurance plays a key role.

“No one wants to think about using their homeowners' policy,” said G. Kevin Nemith, chairman for Insurance Agents & Brokers Service Group Inc. “But tragedies like these fires remind all of us that we can’t ignore it.”

Insurance Agents & Brokers Service Group Inc. offers these top five things local homeowners can learn about insurance from the California wildfires:

  1. Inventory your belongings. Tour your house with a camera or camcorder in hand. Keep the photos or recording at your office or in a safety-deposit box.
  2. Copy key paperwork. Make copies or scan your birth certificate, driver’s license and insurance cards. Stash them in a safety-deposit box.
  3. Know what is covered. Check how your policy treats valuables as well as separate structures on your property. Determine if you have loss-of-use coverage.
  4. Know your limits. Learn how much is covered by your policy. Consider a rider to protect pricy antiques, jewelry and artwork.
  5. File quickly. Do not delay if you have a claim. Remember that some policies include time limits.
